School Day EYFS/KS1
At Riverside, every day is filled with exciting learning opportunities, friendship, and fun. We provide a structured yet engaging environment where children feel happy, safe, and ready to learn. Here’s what a typical day looks like at our school.
Morning Routine
9:10 – Doors Open
Children arrive at school, greeted by staff as they enter the playground. This is a chance to settle in, chat with friends, and get ready for the day ahead.
9:15 – Registration & Reading
The school day officially begins with registration. Children will then get the chance to read books of their own choosing or take their turn to read with the class teacher either individually or as a group. Here at Riverside, we use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme with our children.
9:35– Assembly (on selected days)
Assemblies are a time for the whole school to come together. These may focus on values, achievements, British values, or special themes such as diversity, kindness, or resilience.
9:45 – English
The first lesson of the day is usually focused on English. Children will get the opportunity to explore a class text to inspire writing, practise their phonics learning and show off their grammar skills.
10:25– Break Time
A chance to run, play, and socialise! Children enjoy outdoor play with their friends, using playground equipment or engaging in active games. A healthy snack helps keep energy levels up.
10:40 – Mathematics
Maths lessons are interactive and practical, helping children develop fluency and problem-solving skills. Lessons may include hands-on activities, reasoning tasks, and group work to build confidence with numbers.
Lunchtime
11:45– Lunch & Play
Children enjoy a healthy, balanced meal in the dining hall or packed lunch from home. Afterwards, they have time to play, explore, or take part in lunchtime activities.
Afternoon Learning
12:45 – Phonics/Spelling
The start of afternoon learning is dedicated to phonics and spelling, where children get exposed to new spelling patterns or phonics codes to help with their reading and writing. Here at Riverside, we use the Floppy Phonics scheme of work to teach phonics.
1:30 – Topic Work
Depending on the day, children will tackle one of the many topics they cover, whether it be conducting investigations in Science, looking at historical evidence in History or learning about different cultures and religions in RE.
2:15 – Afternoon Break
Children get a final run around the playground to stretch their legs.
2:30– Topic Work / Story time
Children finish off their afternoon work and listen to the class story before getting ready for home time.
3:15 – End of the School Day
Children are collected by parents and carers or attend after-school clubs.
At Riverside, every day is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.
